Late returns

What happens if you are late with your returns; the books you have borrowed have been lost or destroyed? Read about how we deal with reminders and invoices when bad luck strikes.

Returns

The University Library's items for home loan are always borrowed on a so-called 'open' loan period. This means that you are guaranteed a loan period of 28 days. After this time the material can be recalled during the rest of the loan period. If the material is not recalled, it must be returned at the latest by the due date in question.

As a borrower you are responsible for the borrowed item until it is registered as returned in our library system. If you go away or become ill, please arrange for someone else to return the item for you. It can also be sent by post to us.

Please note that if you have returned the book in another library's (within Lund University) book drop box, the loan is not immediately registered as returned. Since we cannot check when a book has been left in a book drop box, we will go on the actual return date in our library system.

Reminders

If the item is not returned on time, we will send a reminder through email. The reminders are just an additional service. As a borrower you are still required to take note of the length of the loan. You can check your loans by logging into the library catalogue LUBcat (with your library card number and personal id number). You can also telephone the library or visit us in person.

We will send the reminders to the email address which you have specified in your library card application or which you have entered in LUBcat. You are responsible for giving us correct contact details.

Reminders are not sent by regular mail.

Invoices

If the item has not been returned despite reminders, we will send an invoice. This consists of the full replacement cost of the item plus a handling fee of SEK 300 per item. The handling fee will cover the administration cost of the delayed/lost item.

If you have received an invoice and return the item, you only need to pay the handling fee. If you find the item after paying the invoice, please contact us. When the book is returned, we will refund the cost of the book. The handling fee however remains. The handling fee can be cancelled, if you show a medical certificate of illness of not being able to return the item during the relevant time period. 

If your library card has been blocked, this may be a result of your unpaid invoice. When you have paid the invoice or returned the book and paid the handling fee, the block will be cancelled.
