Mårten Sjöbeck (1886-1976), Honorary Doctor of Lund University, land historian and cultural geographer, documented the southern Swedish landscape between 1920 and 1960. In Lund University Library there are about 3,000 photographs of a very high technical and artistic quality. Only a small number have been published before.
Thanks to the University Library's participation in the Europeana Travel project, the major part of the collection are now digitised, becoming available in Europeana and in our new image database.
The photographs document the traces in the landscape by old traditional farming methods, from the time before the impact of modern farming and large-scale production. They have been carefully documented and are complemented by written records, sketches and maps.
The photographs might also be used by the County Administrative Board in Skåne, which has been offered to display them in different locations in nature reserves and footpaths. That would give visitors a unique possibility to see the changes in the landscape - something highly relevant in a time of increased consciousness of our impact on the environment.
